Swan Ganz Catheter
Swan Ganz catheterization, also known as pulmonary artery catheterization, is an advanced invasive monitoring procedure widely used in critical care and cardiac management at Moolchand Hospital, one of the best critical care and cardiac hospitals in Delhi. It involves the insertion of a specialized balloon-tipped catheter through a central vein into the right side of the heart and pulmonary artery to measure key hemodynamic parameters.
This procedure plays a crucial role in managing critically ill patients by providing real-time data on cardiac output, pulmonary artery pressures, central venous pressure, and oxygen delivery. These measurements allow clinicians to accurately assess heart function, fluid status, and tissue perfusion — enabling precise, individualized treatment decisions in complex medical conditions.
The procedure begins with placement of a central venous access under strict sterile conditions, typically via the internal jugular, subclavian, or femoral vein. The Swan Ganz catheter is then carefully advanced through the right atrium, right ventricle, and into the pulmonary artery using pressure waveform guidance. A small balloon at the tip of the catheter helps in smooth navigation and allows measurement of pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, an important indicator of left heart function.
Swan Ganz catheterization is particularly valuable in conditions such as cardiogenic shock, severe heart failure, septic shock, pulmonary hypertension, and in post-operative monitoring following major cardiac surgery. It helps guide fluid resuscitation, vasopressor therapy, inotropic support, and ventilatory management — significantly improving patient outcomes in critically unstable conditions.
