Neurosurgery is the discipline in medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous system. Because of this emphasis, it is a discipline that focuses on a complete system rather than any specific region of the body. A patient may need a surgery when the medicine management fails to restore health. For instance, in 25–30% of people with epilepsy the seizures cannot be controlled with drugs. At times people fear to endure in such surgeries’ because there is high risk involved. However, the real picture is quite the opposite, if a patient is being handled by an experienced, established and credible surgeon, the long-term recovery is assured.
For instance, many times seizures prove to be intractable and drug treatment is unsatisfactory; therefore appropriate patients should be referred to an epilepsy center to be evaluated for surgery. By "intractable" we mean that seizures have not been brought under acceptable control with the resources available to the primary care physician or neurologist. Epilepsy surgery is a safe and effective alternative treatment in selected cases. Evaluation for surgery includes several methods: video- monitoring, brain imaging, different kinds of electroencephalography, and neuropsychological tests. The goal of resective surgery for epilepsy is most often cure of the seizure disorder. Recently many articles have been published about epilepsy surgery.
