Primary Or Emergency Angioplasty
Primary or emergency angioplasty — clinically known as Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Primary PCI) — is the most effective, life-saving treatment for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), or acute heart attack, available at Moolchand Hospital, one of the best cardiac hospitals in Delhi.
During a heart attack, a coronary artery becomes suddenly and completely blocked, usually by a ruptured atherosclerotic plaque. Every minute of delay causes irreversible damage to the heart muscle. Primary PCI aims to restore blood flow within the critical "golden 90-minute window" from the time of hospital arrival, dramatically reducing mortality, heart failure risk, and long-term cardiac disability.
At Moolchand Hospital in Lajpat Nagar, our dedicated cardiac catheterization laboratory (Cath Lab) operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide round-the-clock emergency angioplasty. Upon arrival, STEMI patients are fast-tracked through a streamlined protocol — ECG within 10 minutes of arrival, activation of the Cath Lab team, and direct transfer to the procedure room to minimize door-to-balloon time.
During the procedure, performed under local anaesthesia and conscious sedation, an interventional cardiologist threads a catheter from the wrist (radial approach) or groin (femoral approach) to the heart. The blocked artery is identified on coronary angiography, and a guidewire is advanced across the blockage. A balloon is inflated to open the artery, and a drug-eluting stent is deployed to keep it permanently open, restoring normal blood flow to the heart muscle.
Post-procedure, patients are monitored in the cardiac ICU (CICU) at Moolchand Hospital, and dual antiplatelet therapy is initiated to maintain stent patency. Cardiac rehabilitation and risk factor modification complete the continuum of care.
Our team of globally acclaimed super specialists has pioneered several primary or emergency angioplasty surgeries.
