Overview

An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a serious condition where the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the lower body — the aorta — becomes enlarged or bulges due to weakening of its wall. If undetected or untreated, an AAA may rupture and lead to life-threatening bleeding.

Causes & Risk Factors

Common causes include:

• Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Symptoms

AAAs often grow slowly and silently, with no symptoms until advanced stages. Possible signs include:

• Deep, constant pain in the abdomen or back

• A pulsating sensation in the abdomen

• Sudden, severe pain and signs of internal bleeding (in case of rupture)

• Medical Management: For smaller AAAs — lifestyle changes, blood pressure control, and scheduled imaging

• Open Surgical Repair: For larger or ruptured aneurysms requiring more direct intervention
