What I'd like to tell my patients
Sir William Osler, the father of medicine, rightly said, “Listen to your patient, he is telling you the diagnosis.” His words underline and emphasise the importance of taking a good medical history. A good history is the sum total of a patient’s previous surgeries, health status, medical complains, concerns and expectations as well as any accompanying diagnosis. I strongly believe in Sir William Osler’s words.
I treat my patients with respect and concern and am never in a rush to reach a diagnosis. I identify potential medical problems, discuss all the concerns my patient has, and take detailed medical history. This helps me get an idea of my patients’ functional capacity to assess whether the proposed surgery would be well-tolerated without any preoperative risks.
Patients generally arrive in a state of stress and anxiety. During my consultations, I keep in mind what makes for a compassionate patient–doctor relationship. Many of my patients feel an improved sense of well-being by the openness and optimal healing environment that Moolchand provides. I use my humour to establish a more personal relationship with them, thereby easing their tensions and anxiety. Along with maintaining a high level of competence, I keep a personal and light touch with my patients to convey “I care”.
