Hernioplasty / Herniorrhaphy / Herniotomy
Hernia repair is one of the most frequently performed general surgical procedures at Moolchand Hospital, one of the best surgery hospitals in Delhi. A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue protrudes through a weak point or defect in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue wall — most commonly in the groin (inguinal hernia), navel (umbilical hernia), upper stomach (hiatal hernia), or at a previous surgical scar (incisional hernia).
The three main surgical approaches to hernia repair are herniotomy, herniorrhaphy, and hernioplasty, each with distinct technical principles. Herniotomy — most commonly performed in children — involves simply opening and excising the hernia sac and closing it at its neck, without formal repair of the abdominal wall defect. This is appropriate in paediatric patients as the underlying muscle is healthy and strong once the sac is removed.
Herniorrhaphy involves suture repair of the hernia defect using the patient's own native tissues, with various techniques such as the Bassini, Shouldice, or Desarda repair for inguinal hernias. While tissue repair is effective, it has higher recurrence rates than mesh-based repair, particularly for large defects or in older patients with weak tissues.
Hernioplasty — the gold standard for adult hernia repair — involves reinforcing the repair with a synthetic polypropylene mesh placed either open (Lichtenstein tension-free repair for inguinal hernias) or laparoscopically (TEP or TAPP approach). Mesh reinforcement significantly reduces hernia recurrence rates to less than 1–2% and is preferred for most adult hernia repairs.
Laparoscopic hernia repair is available at Moolchand Hospital for inguinal, femoral, umbilical, and incisional hernias, offering the advantages of smaller incisions, less post-operative pain, faster return to activity, and the ability to repair bilateral hernias through the same approach. Day-care surgery is available for uncomplicated hernias.

Hernioplasty / Herniorrhaphy / Herniotomy
Hernioplasty, herniorrhaphy, and herniotomy are surgical procedures for hernia repair, differing in technique — herniotomy closes the sac only, herniorrhaphy repairs with native tissue, and hernioplasty reinforces with a synthetic mesh for stronger, lower-recurrence repair.
Incisional Hernia Repair
Hiatus hernia repair is a surgical procedure to correct a hiatal hernia — where part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest — relieving severe reflux, regurgitation, and chest pain that has not responded to medical management.
