Exploratory Laparotomy
Exploratory laparotomy is a fundamental and often life-saving surgical procedure performed by experienced general and emergency surgeons at Moolchand Hospital, one of the best surgery hospitals in Delhi. It involves making a surgical incision in the abdominal wall to directly inspect the abdominal and pelvic organs — including the stomach, intestines, liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, and reproductive organs — to identify and treat the underlying cause of a patient's condition.
Exploratory laparotomy is indicated when non-invasive investigations such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI fail to provide a definitive diagnosis, or when the patient's condition demands immediate surgical intervention. Common indications include acute abdominal emergencies such as intestinal perforation, bowel obstruction, internal hemorrhage from trauma, ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, peritonitis, ischemic bowel, or undiagnosed abdominal masses suspected to be malignant.
During the procedure, the surgeon makes a midline or transverse incision in the abdomen under general anaesthesia. The abdominal cavity is systematically explored from the diaphragm to the pelvis, examining all organs for pathology. Any identified problem — such as a perforated bowel, bleeding vessel, abscess, or tumour — is addressed simultaneously during the same operation.
With advances in laparoscopic and imaging technology, many conditions that previously required open laparotomy can now be managed minimally invasively. However, exploratory laparotomy remains the gold standard in emergency settings, complex trauma, and cases where laparoscopy is contraindicated.
Moolchand Hospital in Lajpat Nagar Delhi is equipped with advanced operation theatres, intensive care units, blood bank services, and round-the-clock surgical teams to handle both emergency and elective laparotomies safely.
