Foreign Body Removal
Foreign body removal is a commonly performed procedure across multiple specialties at Moolchand Hospital, one of the best multi super speciality hospitals in Delhi. Foreign bodies may enter the body through various routes — ingested (swallowed), inhaled into the airway, inserted into body orifices, or embedded in soft tissues following trauma — and their removal is essential to prevent serious complications including infection, obstruction, perforation, and organ damage.
In the ear, nose, and throat (ENT), foreign bodies are particularly common in children who may insert small objects such as beads, seeds, or toys into the ear canal or nasal passages. Inhaled foreign bodies (airway foreign bodies) in children require urgent bronchoscopic removal under general anaesthesia to prevent airway obstruction and pneumonia.
Ingested foreign bodies such as fish or chicken bones, coins, button batteries, or sharp objects lodged in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines require endoscopic removal using flexible or rigid endoscopy. Button batteries are particularly dangerous as they can cause rapid tissue necrosis and perforation through electrochemical injury and must be treated as an emergency.
Soft tissue foreign bodies resulting from trauma — such as glass fragments, metal shards, thorns, or bullets — require surgical exploration and extraction under local or general anaesthesia, guided by imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, or fluoroscopy) to accurately localize the object before removal.
At Moolchand Hospital in Lajpat Nagar Delhi, our multidisciplinary team of ENT specialists, gastroenterologists, emergency physicians, and general surgeons are available round-the-clock to manage foreign body emergencies across all age groups, equipped with advanced endoscopic, bronchoscopic, and surgical instrumentation for safe and effective removal.
