Surgical Options in Cancer Treatment: What Patients Should Know

    Oct 21, 2025

Published on October 2025 | New Delhi

    Introduction

Surgery remains one of the most powerful and effective tools in the treatment of cancer. However, not all surgeries are the same—different cancers, stages, and patient conditions require different surgical approaches.

At Moolchand, a leading hospital in Delhi, superb physicians provide safe, precise, and effective treatment using cutting-edge technology, all while ensuring compassionate care and ethical medical guidance.

    Types of Cancer Surgery

    1. Curative Surgery:
Removes the tumor and surrounding tissue completely to eliminate all visible traces of cancer.
    2. Preventive Surgery:
Removes tissues that are at high risk of becoming cancerous, helping to prevent cancer before it starts.
    3. Diagnostic Surgery:
Involves taking a biopsy or tissue sample to confirm the diagnosis and determine the type of cancer.
    4. Reconstructive Surgery:
Restores the body’s appearance or function after tumor removal—such as breast reconstruction after mastectomy or facial reconstruction after oral cancer surgery.
    5. Palliative Surgery:
Aimed at relieving symptoms or improving quality of life in advanced stages of cancer, rather than curing it.

Each surgical type serves a unique purpose, and in many cases, a combination of procedures may be used depending on the stage and spread of the disease.

    Advanced Surgical Options

Modern advancements in surgical oncology have revolutionized how cancer is treated.

    • Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS):
Uses smaller incisions, resulting in less pain, faster recovery, and reduced hospital stay.
    • Robotic Surgery:
Provides enhanced precision, flexibility, and control—especially valuable in delicate or complex procedures.
    • Organ-Sparing Surgery:
Focuses on removing only the diseased part while preserving the normal function of surrounding organs.

These advanced options ensure improved outcomes, reduced complications, and faster return to normal life.

    Patient Considerations

Cancer surgery is highly individualized. The right approach depends on several factors, including:

    • Type and Stage of Cancer: Determines the extent and purpose of surgery.
    • Overall Health: A patient’s fitness level, heart condition, and recovery potential are evaluated before surgery.
    • Ethical Medical Advice: At Moolchand, integrity guides every treatment plan, ensuring patients receive the most appropriate, evidence-based care.

Every surgical decision at Moolchand is made collaboratively—with the patient’s understanding, comfort, and consent at the core.

    Conclusion

Cancer surgery requires not only advanced medical expertise but also empathy, precision, and honesty.

At Moolchand, recognized among the top hospitals in Delhi, patients receive treatment guided by skilled surgeons, supported by advanced facilities, and delivered with compassion and integrity.

Combining modern technology with human touch, Moolchand continues to redefine cancer care—offering hope, healing, and affordable excellence to every patient who walks through its doors.

Sciatica: Symptoms, Causes, and Pain Relief Options

    Oct 18, 2025

Published on October 2025 | New Delhi

    Introduction

If you’ve ever experienced sharp, shooting pain running from your lower back down to your leg, you may have had sciatica. This condition affects millions of people worldwide and can severely limit mobility and comfort. The good news is that with the right diagnosis and treatment, sciatica can be effectively managed and even prevented from recurring.

At Moolchand, our expert physicians specialize in identifying the underlying causes of pain and creating customized treatment plans that combine precision, compassion, and advanced medical technology.

    What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is not a disease but a symptom resulting from irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve—the longest nerve in the body, running from the lower spine through the hips and down to the feet. When this nerve is inflamed or compressed, it causes pain that radiates along its path, typically affecting one side of the body.

    Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica pain can range from mild discomfort to severe, debilitating pain. Common symptoms include:

    ·       Sharp, shooting pain from the lower back to the leg

    ·       Tingling, numbness, or “pins and needles” in the leg or foot

    ·       Muscle weakness in the affected leg

    ·       Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting, standing, or coughing

The intensity and pattern of pain can vary depending on the level of nerve involvement, but it typically affects one side of the body.

    Common Causes of Sciatica

Several conditions can trigger sciatic nerve irritation, including:

    ·       Herniated disc: A slipped or bulging disc presses against the nerve.

    ·       Spinal stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal compresses the nerve.

    ·       Spondylolisthesis: When one vertebra slips forward over another.

    ·       Trauma or injury: Accidents affecting the lower back or pelvis.

    ·       Poor posture or prolonged sitting: Increases spinal strain and nerve compression.

    Diagnosis

A pain management specialist will assess the condition through:

    ·       Detailed medical history and symptom review

    ·       Physical examination focusing on reflexes, muscle strength, and flexibility

    ·       Imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans to confirm the underlying cause

Accurate diagnosis ensures that treatment is targeted, reducing recurrence and improving long-term outcomes.

    Treatment Options for Sciatica

    1. Medications

    ·       Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs

    ·       Muscle relaxants for spasm control

    ·       Nerve pain medications for persistent symptoms

    2. Physiotherapy

    ·       Stretching and strengthening exercises

    ·       Core stability training to support the spine

    ·       Posture correction to prevent nerve compression

    3. Interventional Pain Procedures

    ·       Epidural steroid injections to reduce inflammation

    ·       Nerve blocks to interrupt pain signals

    ·       Radiofrequency ablation for long-term relief

    4. Lifestyle Modifications

    ·       Regular physical activity

    ·       Weight management to reduce spinal strain

    ·       Ergonomic furniture and safe lifting techniques

When to See a Pain Specialist

    Seek medical help if:

    ·       Pain persists for more than a few weeks

    ·       Pain disrupts sleep or daily routine

    ·       You experience numbness, weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control

Delaying treatment can worsen symptoms and lead to long-term complications.

    The Bottom Line

Sciatica can be painful and disabling, but with timely diagnosis and proper treatment, full recovery is achievable. Early intervention not only provides relief but also prevents chronic pain and nerve damage.

At Moolchand, Dr. Neha Chaudhary and her team provide advanced diagnostic and interventional pain management solutions, helping patients overcome sciatica and regain their mobility, comfort, and confidence.

What Does a Cancer Surgeon Do? Role of an Oncosurgeon in Cancer Care

    Oct 18, 2025

By Dr. Bimlesh Thakur, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Moolchand Hospital

Published on October 2025 | New Delhi

    Introduction

When people hear the word cancer, surgery may not be the first treatment that comes to mind. Yet, cancer surgeons (oncosurgeons) play a pivotal role in diagnosing, treating, and guiding patients throughout their cancer journey.

For decades, oncosurgeons have stood at the forefront of the fight against cancer. Thanks to their relentless efforts, cancer is no longer viewed as a “death sentence” but rather a chronic condition that can be managed effectively with modern treatment.

“At Moolchand Hospital, our superb physicians deliver outcomes that matter—combining cutting-edge technology, integrity, and compassionate care,” says Dr. Bimlesh Thakur, Consultant – Surgical Oncology.

    The Role of an Oncosurgeon

An oncosurgeon is a specialist who performs surgery to diagnose, treat, and sometimes prevent cancer. Their responsibilities include:

    • Diagnosis: Performing biopsies and tissue sampling to confirm cancer.
    • Treatment Planning: Removing tumors with precision while preserving healthy organs and surrounding tissues.
    • Prevention: Performing surgeries for patients at high genetic or familial risk (e.g., BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers).
    • Comprehensive Cancer Care: Collaborating with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and physicians for a multidisciplinary approach.

“Surgical oncology is not just about removing a tumor—it’s about restoring life, function, and hope,” says Dr. Thakur.

    Why Surgical Oncology Matters

Surgery remains one of the most effective and often curative cancer treatments.

    • Early and quality surgery can completely remove certain cancers.
    • Improves quality of life by reducing pain or relieving blockages.
    • Guides further treatment by providing insight for tailored chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

In cases such as breast cancer, head and neck cancer, and gynaecologic cancers, early surgery is often the key to a complete cure.

    Team-Based Approach at Moolchand

At the Department of Oncology, cancer care is a collective effort led by oncosurgeons and supported by multiple specialists:

    • Cardiologists – ensuring heart safety during and after cancer treatment.
    • Neurologists – managing neuro-oncology cases such as brain and spinal tumors.
    • ENT Specialists – treating head and neck cancers.
    • Gynaecologists – for gynaecologic cancers like ovarian or uterine cancer.
    • Urologists – for uro-oncology and prostate cancer care.

This multidisciplinary, ethical approach ensures that every patient receives coordinated, evidence-based, and compassionate care.

    Moolchand’s Oncology Expertise

The Moolchand Centre for Oncology is equipped with advanced diagnostic and surgical technologies, including:

    • AI-assisted imaging for early detection and staging.
    • High-definition endoscopy for minimally invasive surgeries.
    • Robotic and laparoscopic platforms for precision tumor removal and faster recovery.

At Moolchand, technology works hand-in-hand with empathy—offering world-class treatment while prioritizing patient comfort and dignity.

    Conclusion

Oncosurgeons are more than just surgeons—they are guides in a patient’s fight against cancer.

“At Moolchand Hospital, our mission is to blend medical excellence with compassion,” says Dr. Thakur. “By focusing on integrity, affordability, and innovation, we ensure that every patient receives the right treatment at the right time.”

Indian Army’s First Sikh Chief General JJ Singh and Wife Anupama Singh March Side by Side into Knee Replacement Surgery

Published on October 16, 2025 | New Delhi
    By Neha Sharma

It was a regular morning at senior orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma’s OPD at Moolchand Hospital in Delhi—until a senior citizen couple walked in seeking relief from persistent knee pain. The diagnosis was clear: both required robotic knee replacement.

What made this consultation truly unique was the couple’s request—they wanted to undergo surgery together, on the same day. Only later did Dr. Sharma realize who they were: General Joginder Jaswant Singh (Retd.), India’s first Sikh Chief of Army Staff, and his wife, renowned artist Anupama Singh.

“I’ve never seen something like this,” said Dr. Sharma. “They came in as humble, unassuming patients. When I suggested knee replacement for both, they simply said they’d like to do it side by side. It was inspiring.”

    A Shared Journey of Healing

On the day of their surgery in August, Anupama was wheeled in first, followed by the General. Both underwent robotic-assisted total knee replacement, a minimally invasive procedure that delivers precision, safety, and rapid recovery.

“We thought, why not get it done together?” said General Singh, 80. “We encouraged each other through the exercises and recovery—it made the process easier and even fun.”

Interestingly, the General underwent replacement in his right knee, while Anupama had her left replaced. “So when we walk together, our operated knees move in sync,” he laughed. “It’s poetic in a way.”

Within hours of surgery, both were walking—with assistance—and by evening, they took their first steps together.

“It was remarkable,” Dr. Sharma shared. “They recovered beautifully. Robotic-assisted surgery allowed them to walk the same evening with minimal discomfort.”

Beyond Recovery – Back to Golf, Art, and Life

Just weeks later, the couple resumed their normal lives. Anupama is back to painting and preparing for a golf tournament in Mumbai, while General Singh is completing his next book and planning trips to Chandigarh and Goa.

“Golf has always been our shared passion,” Anupama said. “We even watched recovery videos together, cheering each other on.”

A Symbol of Strength, Equality, and Love

Psychiatrist Dr. Deepak Raheja described the couple’s journey as “a powerful symbol of emotional equality.”

“When couples undergo surgery together, their minds and bodies heal in synchrony,” Dr. Raheja explained. “Shared recovery enhances motivation, reduces anxiety, and deepens emotional connection—especially in elderly couples.”

A Moolchand Milestone in Orthopaedic Care

The dual surgery, led by Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, represents another milestone for Moolchand Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement—a centre known for excellence in arthritis, osteoarthritis of the knee, and advanced robotic-assisted procedures.

At Moolchand, superb physicians, cutting-edge technology, and compassionate care come together to deliver outcomes that restore not just mobility but also independence, dignity, and quality of life.

“General JJ Singh and Mrs. Singh exemplify courage and optimism,” said Dr. Sharma. “Their decision to walk this journey together perfectly symbolizes the spirit of healing that defines Moolchand.”

    The Takeaway

From the battlefield to the operating room, General JJ Singh continues to inspire—proving that strength, partnership, and willpower can overcome any challenge.

The couple now looks forward to completing their remaining knee surgeries soon and returning to what they love most—golf, travel, and life without pain.

At Moolchand Hospital, they didn’t just regain mobility. They rediscovered the joy of walking through life—together.
