Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
Overview
An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a serious condition where the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the lower body — the aorta — becomes enlarged or bulges due to weakening of its wall. If undetected or untreated, an AAA may rupture and lead to life-threatening bleeding.
At Moolchand Hospitals, our team of superb physicians and vascular specialists (see our Vascular & Endovascular Surgery) use cutting-edge technology for early detection and safe treatment. We ensure compassionate care, integrity, and affordable excellence in every patient interaction.
Causes & Risk Factors
Common causes include:
-
Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
-
Hypertension (high blood pressure)
-
Smoking
-
Family history or genetic predisposition
-
Advanced age (especially men over 60)
At Moolchand, preventive screening and early detection are key. We use high-resolution ultrasound and CT angiography (offered under our Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery wing) to diagnose and monitor at-risk patients.

Symptoms
AAAs often grow slowly and silently, with no symptoms until advanced stages. Possible signs include:
-
Deep, constant pain in the abdomen or back
-
A pulsating sensation in the abdomen
-
Sudden, severe pain and signs of internal bleeding (in case of rupture)
If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention via our Emergency & Trauma department: Emergency & Trauma
Diagnosis
Diagnosis at Moolchand is meticulous and patient-oriented:
-
Ultrasound scanning (for screening / follow-up)
-
CT / MRI angiography to obtain detailed images
-
Comprehensive cardiovascular evaluation to assess associated risks
We uphold integrity and transparency in every diagnostic step because at Moolchand, we do what’s right for you.
Treatment Options
Treatment is tailored depending on the aneurysm’s size and rate of growth:
-
Medical Management: For smaller AAAs — lifestyle changes, blood pressure control, and scheduled imaging
-
Endovascular Repair (EVAR): A minimally invasive procedure placing a stent graft inside the aorta. Our Vascular & Endovascular Surgery team leads in this advanced method.
-
Open Surgical Repair: For larger or ruptured aneurysms requiring more direct intervention
Moolchand combines compassionate care, surgical expertise, and state-of-the-art facilities to ensure patient safety and optimal recovery.
