Childhood Vaccinations: Why They Matter and the Recommended Schedule

    Dr Sanjay Siddharth

Vaccinations are one of the greatest advances in modern medicine. They protect children from life-threatening diseases and help build stronger immunity for a healthier future.

    Why Vaccinations Matter

    • Disease prevention: Vaccines protect against polio, measles, whooping cough, hepatitis, and more.
    • Community safety: When most children are vaccinated, it reduces outbreaks (herd immunity).
    • Fewer complications: Vaccinated children have a much lower risk of severe illness or hospitalization.

Recommended Schedule (as per IAP – Indian Academy of Paediatrics)

    • At birth: BCG, Hepatitis B, Polio
    • 6, 10, 14 weeks: DTP, Polio, Hepatitis B, Hib, Rotavirus, Pneumococcal
    • 6–9 months: Influenza (seasonal), Measles/MR
    • 12–15 months: MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis A
    • 16–24 months: Booster doses for DTP, Polio
    • 4–6 years: DTP, Polio, MMR booster
    • 9–14 years: HPV (especially for girls)
(Schedules may vary; consult your pediatrician for individual recommendations.)

    Myths vs Facts

    • Myth: “Vaccines cause illness.”
Fact: Vaccines are safe, with only mild side effects like soreness or mild fever.
    • Myth: “Natural immunity is better.”
Fact: Natural infections can be dangerous; vaccines give safe protection.

Takeaway: Staying up-to-date with your child’s vaccination schedule is one of the best ways to safeguard their long-term health.
