Having been diagnosed with a critical condition can be confusing and scary for anyone. But, we are here to help you. Our Interventional Radiology (IR) Department is dedicated to the application of imaging to guide minimally invasive techniques utilized in diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of conditions. Guided by X-ray, ultrasound and other imaging technology, our interventional radiologists use catheters to access the blood vessels and treat vascular blockages or embolise vascular abnormalities. Other procedures include biopsies, drainage tubes, feeding tubes and pain injections, as well as treatment of cancerous tumors. Because these procedures can be performed without invasive surgery, the recovery time is much faster and there is less risk for complications.

Interventional radiology procedures are often scheduled on an outpatient basis. Although some of these procedures involve sedation, many are done using a local anesthetic and the patient is discharged soon after the procedure. Body parts and systems that can be treated using IR include:

    • Abdomen (intestine, kidneys, liver, stomach)
    • Central nervous system (brain, spine)
    • Chest (lungs, respiratory system)
    • Heart and vascular (arteries, veins, haemodialysis access)
    • Musculoskeletal (bones, joints, spine)
    • Genitourinary (uterus, testes, kidneys)
    • Other organs and soft tissues.
Interventional radiologists were the originators of balloon angioplasty and vascular stent procedures. The field has rapidly evolved from its vascular origins to include the management of “almost inoperable or too difficult to operate” malignancies and to provide therapeutic options to patients too debilitated to undergo more traditional surgical procedures for a range of diseases. Interventional radiologists can also be involved in post-procedural care, both in cases where they work alone and in cases which involve collaboration with other physicians.
